The healing powers of nature
Over the last few weeks I had the privilege of visiting a number of the South African National Parks and entrenching myself in nature. And during that time I once again was under the impression of the healing powers of nature. It impacts positively on our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. As Einstein once said: Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.
Don’t take my word for it! Research has shown that being in nature have a number of physical and mental health benefits, including:
Stress reduction
Spending time in nature can lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone), reduce blood pressure, and promote relaxation. Even as little as 10 minutes will have a positive impact on your stress levels.
Improved mental health
Nowadays there are a number of retreats across the globe that are aimed at reducing anxiety and depression, improve mood, and enhance cognitive function; all by allowing individuals to become quiet in nature. When last have you spent some quiet time in nature, being it a park or just under a tree in your garden?
Enhanced immune function
Studies suggest that being in nature can strengthen the immune system and promote faster healing.
Improved sleep quality
Spending time in nature can improve sleep quality and address sleep disturbances. It was found that people that spend an hour in nature every day in the afternoon, had 10 times better sleep quality compared to those that did not.
A sense of connection
Nature is so special and observing the growth of plants can promote a sense of awe and wonder. It becomes a connection with something larger than oneself. There is no need to spend time in national parks, game reserves, etc (unless you enjoy that!); some time in a garden or park are good enough to bring about this connection and allow you to see the buzz of everyday life for what it is.
Perhaps make it your goal to spend some time outside in nature at least once a week and before you know it, you will see and feel the benefits of the power of nature!
