Lately, I have noticed a lot of posts telling people to just quit tough or toxic workplaces. While that sounds simple, it is rarely that easy, especially when you are the sole breadwinner or facing a tough job market.
There is thus a need to also have some practical tools to survive in a tough or toxic work environment, and here are a few:
Don’t take it personally – Most people’s behaviour reflects their own internal struggles, not your worth. Breathe deeply to break your automatic emotional reaction. Ask yourself: Does this critic truly know me, and does their opinion actually matter? Finally, ground yourself by naming two of your core strengths.
Set firm boundaries – Try turning off work notifications after hours and honouring your lunch break. Even if you only have 15 minutes, stepping away makes a huge difference. Use that time to focus on your food, listen to a fun podcast, or just look outside. It breaks up the chaos and gives your mind the chance to rest and regain its strength.
Stay out of the drama – Guard your peace by staying out of office gossip; information shared in confidence can easily be used against you. Sometimes, the best approach is to keep your head down and maintain quiet, professional privacy. Focus on doing your best work, and let the chaos roll off you like water off a duck’s back.
Protect your energy – Although we all want fulfilment from our careers; it is completely fine to treat a job strictly as a financial transaction. Look at your work as a steady resource – a way to earn an income so you can fully enjoy, explore, and invest in the rest of your life.
Navigating a tough or toxic environment is incredibly difficult, but it doesn’t have to control your peace of mind. You always retain the power to choose how you feel, react, and respond.
Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond to it…
