“The Future Depends on What You Do Today”

What is happiness?

There is no single answer to this question. Happiness looks different for everyone. For you, maybe it is being at peace with who you are. Or having a network of friends who accept you. Or the freedom to pursue your dreams. Or having the dream job you always wanted.

Regardless of what you consider to be happiness; living a happier, more satisfied life is within your reach. All you have to do is to tweak some of your habits. Herewith a couple of thoughts to get you there:

  1. Smile

Not only is smiling a universal language, but it also makes you feel better. When we smile, the brain releases dopamine, which makes us happier. I am not suggesting that you stick a grin on your face all day long, but when you feel low, smile and you will be surprised how much better you feel.

  1. Imagine the best outcome

Do not be afraid to look at what you really want and see yourself getting it. Many people avoid this process because they do not want to be disappointed if things do not work out. The truth is that imagining getting what you want is a big part of achieving it. If you can visualise it, you can be it!

  1. Exercise

Regular exercise can help to reduce stress, feelings of anxiety, and even the symptoms of depression. It boosts self-esteem and happiness. Even a small amount of physical activity like running down the stairs or walking in the garden can make a difference. Perhaps consider starting with something small as taking a walk around the block every night after dinner, or starting your day with a few stretches will do wonders.

  1. Get some sleep

Whenever we run out of time, we cut our sleep time. Unfortunately, a lack of sleep has a negative impact on your health, brain functioning and emotional well-being. In the longer run the impact of a lack of sleep can result in severe illnesses. What is also interesting is that people who sleep enough are way quicker in completing tasks that those that do not.

There is no better time than now to build a good sleep routine: go to bed every night at more or less the same time and get enough sleep (about 7 to 8 hours). Should you have trouble sleeping, start by reserving an hour before bed-time to switch off your mind – turn off the screens (phone, TV, etc), take a long bath or read something relaxing.

  1. The aptitude of gratitude

By simply being grateful can give your mood a big lift! Start or finish each day by acknowledging two to three things that you are grateful for. Perhaps you can put a gratitude journal in place. With a little practice, you may become more aware of all the positive things around you.

  1. Give a compliment

Research has shown that performing acts of kindness can help you feel happier. When you give someone a sincere complement, you brighten up someone’s day and also give your own emotional well-being a lift.

  1. Plan your day and week

When you know what you are in for, it is so much easier to deal with it. Make a point of planning your life every day and week and try to stick to the plan. Yes, it will never work out exactly as planned, but having plan reduces stress and less stress means more happiness.

  1. Get into nature

Sun and nature are crucial elements of a happy life. As little as 30 minutes a week will make an enormous difference. Perhaps you can have your morning coffee outside, or perhaps you live close to a park where you can sit for a few minutes. Feel the sun on your body, hear and see the joys of nature.

  1. Take time to reflect and celebrate

From time to time, it is good to reflect on where you are, what you are trying to achieve and how you are doing compared to your plan. And celebrate your successes! Do not be so focused on the journey still to go that you forget to celebrate the journey completed.

  1. Acknowledge the unhappy moments

A positive attitude is generally a good thing however, negative things happen to everyone. When you get some bad news, make a mistake, or just do not feel good, acknowledge these feelings and allow yourself to feel them. Then, let the moment pass and take care of yourself.

Happiness is when what you think, what you say and what you do are in harmony. Gandhi.
