“The Future Depends on What You Do Today”

A journey of making small changes with big impact (Part 2)

This blog is the second of a series of blogs that will deal with small changes we all can make that will have a big impact on our lives in the longer run.

The reality is that small changes are easier to integrate into daily routines. The repetition of these small changes will allow them to become habits and these habits are more sustainable over the long term.

The small changes that I am focusing on this month are specific to communication:

Confirm what you hear

So often we listen to respond. While someone is speaking to you, you are already formulating the answer in your mind as opposed to listening fully to what is being said. Next time, confirm what you hear someone say, use clarifying questions or restate what they said in your own words. Not only will it help you to truly hear what is being said, but it also builds better rapport with the other person.

The power of eye contact

There are many cultures in which making eye contact is considered to be a sign of disrespect and arrogance. However, in a work environment, eye contact is considered to be a sign of engagement and interest, and it helps to build rapport and trust. When you have a conversation at work, make eye contact. When you are online, look into the camera; it created the impression that you are making eye contact and sends a very powerful message of connection to the other person.

The power of a smile

One of the things that I absolutely love about South Africa is how strangers make eye contact and smile at each other. And immediate it feels like we can work together. In many situations a smile can cement the relationship, lighten the mood or build more trust and rapport.

Perhaps you can start to practice eye contact and a smile with strangers in a shop. And soon you can transfer it to your family, friends and colleagues. The challenge is on!

The shortest distance between two people is a smile. Victor Borge.
