We often spend so much energy fixated on what we lack that we forget to value what we have. When you open your eyes in the morning, do you appreciate your sight, or do you immediately fixate on the day’s difficulties? When you flip on a bedside lamp, do you feel grateful for electricity, or do you just complain about the bill? The list goes on. The fact that you are reading these words right now means you have access to a device and the internet – another blessing to count.
Appreciation means recognising the value and significance of the people and things around us. Practicing gratitude daily lifts the spirit. When we feel grateful, we surround ourselves with positive energy, and positive energy attracts more of the same. Whatever we focus on grows. If we dwell on our troubles, we invite more stress; if we treasure our blessings, we draw in more joy.
Appreciate everything and everyone in your life. Even appreciate the people who have hurt you; they shaped your growth and brought you to where you are today. Find gratitude in the small things: birds singing outside your window, the open skies, or a quiet breath.
A simple way to build this habit is by keeping a bedside gratitude journal. Every night before you sleep, write down three things from your day that you feel thankful for. Your list will quickly grow. And always remember to say a simple “thank you.”
Even in the dark, we can find gratitude. The darkness simply shows us how much the light is truly worth. The more you embrace an attitude of appreciation, the more love and happiness you invite into your life, making your journey much lighter.
