Who is in control of your life – you or the world around you?
Ever felt like everything and everyone around you are pulling you in different directions and you have no say? Ever felt that the world is unfair and that you are left at the mercy of others? Ever felt that it would be easier to give up?
These might be a sign that you are not in control of your life.
In the absence of this control, you might well lack productivity and optimism; you might not have the energy to tackle and solve problems, and you might experience high levels of stress.
So, how do you regain control of your life?
- Make time to think
I am sure that many of you now argue that you do not have time to think. However, only when we take a deep breath, reflect on our situation and challenges, we will find the answer. It is often the lack of thinking time that got you into this situation. We were not designed to come up with solutions on the fly. We need time to reflect. Do yourself a favour and include some time to think into your busy schedule.
You will be surprised how much better you feel. Close your computer/book and go for a quick walk. When you come back, write down all the things you need to do, prioritise them and tackle one at a time.
- Take ownership
We all hope that someone will look out for us and change our circumstances however, that hardly ever happens. Everyone has their own challenges and problems and focus on their own lives. Don’t expect a saviour; be your own saviour and cheer-leader.
- Be clear on your boundaries
Often, we say yes to everything and everyone without considering the consequences. Or perhaps you know deep down what the consequences will be, but still say yes because you think it is expected from you.
Reality is that our boundaries will only be respected by others when we respect our own boundaries. Take some time to become clear on what your boundaries are and make those known to the people around you. It will be hard work. Remember, you might have set a precedent of having no boundaries; so, you will have to work twice as hard to get those boundaries in place.
- Be realistic
There are only 24 hours in a day and we can only get that much done in those 24 hours. Why say yes to more than what can be done in the available time?
- Say it!
We know that we cannot get to it all or that the expectations are too high. However, so often we just keep quiet and take the pain and blame; working even harder to get it all done. Things will not change unless you speak up. It might not be easy and what you have to say might not be acceptable to all however, if you continue to merely suck it up and take the pain, nothing will change.
- Set goals
Set your goals, then develop the plan to achieve those, and most importantly, action the plan. If you do not like where you are, now is the time to become clear on what it is that you want. And go for it.
- Pace yourself
Rome was not built in a day, so do not expect everything to change overnight. It will take time and dedication to succeed.
- Do not give up
There are no guarantees in life and you might not succeed on first attempt. Don’t give up and don’t give in; keep your eyes on the price!
You just can’t let life happen to you; you have to make life happen.
